SNF Komotini General Hospital

Komotini / Greece

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and the Greek Government have signed an agreement protocol towards an initiative aimed at supporting the Health sector in Greece. This involves various projects, including three major hospital projects designed by RPBW. The projects are developed following a coherent set of principles focused on performance, patient well-being, and connection to nature. The Komotini General Hospital is a 28 750m2 facility containing 180 beds on a sloped site.

The new General Hospital is conceived as a three-storey building plus a technical basement surrounded by an extensive park of about 70.000m2. Only two storeys of the new hospital are visible from the surroundings because of the site articulation with sloped land contours and vegetation screening level 0. Consequently, the hospital building appears lower with a more domestic scale and hovers at the same height of the tree canopies.

Both wings of the hospital are covered by a Solar canopy, made by a metallic steel structure supporting photovoltaic panels, with a 1,6mW of renewable energy capacity. The Canopy is also meant to shade the building from solar radiation and screens the technical installations installed on the roof.

All the core-clinical functions, such as operating theaters, labs and emergency departments are located at level 0. This level offers natural daylight and protected views towards the park.

Level 1 is at street level and is more public and accommodates the main hospital entrance, the outpatients and all the single-day activities such as hemodialysis and blood donation. At this level, the building is transparent and permeable, maximizing the bond with the park. The Inpatients Wards are located at level 2, where the two wings are connected by two glazed and covered bridges.

Above the ground floor the building has a superstructure of engineered mass timber products cross laminated timber floor panels (CLT), Glulam columns and beams, and a wood facade
