University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki / Greece

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) and the Greek Government have signed an agreement protocol towards an initiative aimed at supporting the Health sector in Greece. This involves various projects, including three major hospital projects designed by RPBW. The projects are developed following a coherent set of principles focused on performance, patient well-being, and connection to nature. The University Hospital of Thessaloniki is a specialized facility that will serve all of Northern Greece providing 247 beds over 47 300m2.

The new University Pediatric Hospital will be organized as a Campus, it will provide a tertiary pediatric service for all Northern Greece, secondary pediatric services for greater Thessaloniki and will host a new Referral Centre for Children and Adolescent Mental Health for all Greece. It will also include extensive educational spaces for the academic medical faculty of AUTH, supported by Research Laboratories and multiple spaces for the training of staff and students.

One, is the main Hospital and all the clinical functions and support directly related to the clinical spaces, the Children Mental Health Unit, gardens and healing garden. The other, is the Research Centre, which includes research laboratories, educational spaces and academical offices, administration offices, cafeteria, public parking, staff parking, the centralized Energy Center and a helipad.

The Masterplan takes into consideration different paths for Public and for Staff: a Pedestrian Bridge, which connects the public parking to the entrance of the hospital, providing a safe and accessible journey for children and their families across nature. Meanwhile, an underground corridor for staff, creates an efficient connection between the hospital and the Research Centre, passing below the main Konstantopoulos road.
